MISSION STATEMENT

In the contemporary period where symbolic and virtual interfaces have supplanted face-to-face communication as a dominant mode of communication, it becomes not just important, but crucial, that we have the tools with which we can interpret and analyse the social and ideological foundations of language, media and communication. Increasingly the task of Language Arts education is to provide students with the ability to both function in this information-rich and media saturated environment and to engage with it in a critical and creative way.

In addition to teaching students those analytical skills that will see students become more critical and socially aware consumers of media, educators must also teach students how to become active producers of media. As the Founder and Director of the New York Educational Video Centre Steven Goodman writes; ‘This approach to critical literacy links media analysis to production; learning about the world is directly linked to the possibility of changing it. Command of literacy in this sense is not only a matter of performing well on standardized tests; it is a prerequisite fro self-representation and autonomous citizenship’ (cited in Kellner & Share, 2006: 66).

In response to this directive Hwa Chong Institution has built an in-house media studio dedicated to the creation and production of student films, documentaries and media works. The media artefacts produced by students in the media studio are undoubtedly 'red eye creations', so it is only fitting that this is the label given to the works produced in the studio.
